Creatures and Landscapes
In the earliest iterations, DISSENT began as an eclectic mixture of abstract poems and narrations woven through movement pieces and embodiment of characters. The process of Narradrama pulls from many mediums ranging from photography, dance, physical sculpting as well as character building. Just as any therapy tends to begin-- the work starts out somewhat fragmented. Themes emerge over time. With repeated attempts at corroborating our experiences, making sense of our personal narratives, exploring our values and coming to know ourselves-- we begin to deconstruct our past and re-story our life.
Returning to this performance piece with more clinical knowledge as a working Marriage and Family therapist trainee, I was able to see how each of my fledging characters represented "parts" of my internal family system. Using this therapeutic lens from the work of Richard Schwartz, each character was given more specificity and depth.

It was also important to me that the spaces Satya encounters have a liminal quality to them. They are both nightmarish and child-like. Digital and analog. An in-between of potent but dangerous formlessness.
